Dell Introduces New Server Powerhouse to Accelerate Most Demanding Enterprise Applications
Dell has announced an expansion of its 13th generation PowerEdge servers including the PowerEdge R930, Dell’s most powerful server specifically designed for the most demanding enterprise applications such as in-memory databases, customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP). Once the domain of UNIX systems, these enterprise applications are increasingly shifting to x86 platforms for increased innovation, additional capabilities and lower total cost of ownership.
The global x86 server market has grown more than 600 percent since Dell first introduced the PowerEdge portfolio roughly 20 years ago, while the non-x86 market has been on a constant decline – shrinking 70 percent between 2000 and 2013. Even with the declines, the non-x86 market presents a $9.1 billion (USD) addressable market in 2015(1). With the PowerEdge R930, along with Dell software and services, many of these non-x86 customers can migrate from UNIX to Linux with ease and move to a more innovative, future-ready data centre.
Gan Desheng, Manager Sub-Division, Information Management, Ameco Beijing said: “As our business continued to grow, our previous system was getting slow, hard to manage and unreliable,” “We were looking for a new system to keep up with our business needs and decided to migrate from RISC to x86 servers. By moving from IBM’s P-series UNIX systems to Dell’s PowerEdge R9-series servers we were able to reduce our total cost of ownership by nearly 50 percent, achieve 99.99 percent system availability and improve our SAP ERP performance by 3.5 times.”
The PowerEdge R930 rack server can flexibly scale to optimize transactions and operations while reducing latency, enabling customers to maximize application performance with 22 percent better performance than the previous world record four-socket server on the SAP SD 2-Tier benchmark(2), and accelerate Oracle workloads with eight times more transactions per minute(3). When paired with Dell Fluid Cache for SAN, organisations can further boost transactional performance and accommodate more virtual machines and increase productivity.
This Device can flexibly scale workloads by bringing storage closer to compute and leveraging industry-leading storage scalability and a large memory footprint. The PowerEdge R930 features up to 72 processing cores of the future Intel® Xeon® E7-8800/4800 v3 family of processors, 6TB of memory in 96 DIMMs, 24 internal hard drives and support for up to eight high performance PowerEdge Express Flash NVMe PCIe SSDs.
Other functions include Protection of mission-critical and data-intensive applications with built-in reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) features, such as Intel’s Run Sure Technology and Dell’s exclusive Fault Resilient Memory; Reduce deployment time by 99 percent; receive higher levels of automation and monitor and remediate data centre situations from a hand-held device anywhere in the world with Dell’s recently updated OpenManage systems management portfolio. IT administrators can also reduce time on maintaining compliance standards and server baseline configurations by 91 percent.
Dan Harrington, Research Director, 451 Research said “The PowerEdge R930 certainly has the power, capacity and reliability required to meet most business needs. But what’s more important is Dell’s ecosystem approach to solving customers’ pain points, not just the hardware.
“Customers are increasingly looking to purpose-built appliances that can be deployed quickly and reliably for applications such as SAP HANA. Dell’s high end x86 portfolio not only provides the solid hardware platform for this, but also the software and services ecosystem required to manage complex scenarios such as the ongoing industry migration from UNIX to Linux. In addition to this, Dell’s long standing relationships with channel partners and key system integrators” he added.
The PowerEdge M830 and FC830 servers are designed to meet the performance needs for heavy use workloads in demanding database, technical computing and virtualized environments while enabling the flexibility, scalability and manageability customers’ demand for the future-ready enterprise. The PowerEdge FC830 is a full-width, half-height four-socket server block for the PowerEdge FX architecture that helps organisations quickly configure complete workloads using modular building blocks of IT resources. The PowerEdge M830 blade server is a full height, four-socket blade server.
Both the PowerEdge FC830 and PowerEdge M830 provide up to 3TB of memory deployable in 48 DIMM slots, up to 72 processing cores of the future Intel® Xeon® E5-4600 v3 processor family and include Dell’s leading systems management capabilities. These servers provide a 56 percent performance improvement on the SAP SD benchmark compared to their previous generations.

New Dell SonicWALL TZ Series Firewalls Deliver Enterprise-Class Capabilities for Small Business Budgets
Dell yesterday announced the release of the new SonicWALL TZ Series firewalls. Featuring a dramatic increase in network performance to support faster Internet speeds, the ability to analyse encrypted SSL traffic, and an integrated wireless controller, the new solutions deliver enterprise-class security at a price point that is attractive for small businesses and large, multi-site distributed organizations.
Today’s customers are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of network traffic and need security solutions that scale to meet ever-increasing broadband speeds, while fitting within their limited budgets. The new SonicWALL TZ Series is built around state-of-the-art, multi-core security processors to create the highest performance, desktop form-factor Unified Threat Management (UTM) firewall on the market with intrusion prevention speeds reaching up to 1.1Gbps.
The 2015 Dell Security Annual Threat Report shows that 60 percent of internet connections at the end of 2014 were encrypted using SSL. Disturbingly, with the growth of legitimate SSL traffic, cyber-criminals also have begun to hide their attacks from legacy network security products within SSL traffic. To counter this trend, the new SonicWALL TZ Series has the ability and the processing power to inspect SSL connections against the latest threats, providing an even higher level of security for Dell customers.
To accommodate the rapidly increasing proliferation of wireless devices, the tightly integrated, secure wireless controller in the new TZ Series supports the high-speed 802.11ac wireless standard. Combined with the recently introduced 802.11ac-capable Dell SonicPoints, the new TZ Series provides an ideal wireless security solution for both small businesses and large distributed enterprises.
Patrick Sweeney, executive director, Dell Network Security said: “Sadly, technology designed to protect our information is being used to penetrate networks. Encryption should be a great tool, but used by the wrong people, it becomes a weapon against us. The new TZs give small networks and small business locations the vital big enterprise capability of scanning encrypted traffic to ferret out malicious traffic and attacks. The new TZs provide this security without breaking the bank and without bringing the network to its knees.”
While the new TZ series provides SMBs with world-class, enterprise-grade security features, larger businesses will benefit from the series’ distributed enterprise feature set. The new TZ leverages the Dell SonicWALL Global Management System (GMS) to manage thousands of distributed TZ firewalls, enabling simple management of its Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) feature set, including application control, application visualisation, comprehensive reporting and world-class IPS.
Offering 1GbE network interfaces in a compact desktop form-factor appliance, the Dell SonicWALL TZ Series delivers highly-effective anti-malware protection, intrusion prevention, content and URL filtering, application control, and secure mobile access for laptops, smartphones and tablets. With the SonicWALL Mobile Connect unified client, the new TZs provide secure mobile access to Google Android, Mac OS X, Kindle Fire and laptop users.
The patented reassembly-free deep packet inspection engine allows the SonicWALL TZ Series to scan every byte of every packet on all ports and protocols with almost zero latency. This technology eliminates bottlenecks and allows organisations to use security as an enabler, not an inhibitor. The graphical user interface in the TZ Series is easy to comprehend and eliminates the choice between ease-of-use and power by allowing rapid deployment and easy maintenance, thus driving down total cost of ownership.

Xerox technology wows at Zambian ICT Expo
The recent Zambian ICT & Pay Expo 2015 drew a considerable crowd with Xerox digital printing solutions attracting plenty of attention. As a key exhibitor at the event held in Lusaka’s Mulungushi International Conference Centre, Bytes Document Solutions and its Zambian partner DIGIprint Limited were on-hand to provide delegates with direct experiences of how the latest technology drives better business.
That’s according to Christos Diakosavas, DIGIprint managing director, who said there is a shifting trend towards higher standards of quality. ‘This applies to printing services, with company owners and managers across the spectrum looking for document solutions that match their business needs.’He therefore said it should come as no surprise that the first African sale (South Africa excluded) of the new Xerox Versant 2100 press was recently concluded by DIGIprint in Zambia. ‘That’s a reflection of the current climate and market, where there is demand for quality, speed, and innovation. These are all things we strive for constantly at DIGIprint.’
The Xerox Versant 2100 is designed for an average monthly print volume of up to 250,000 images a month and with options including high-capacity feeding, stacking, and finishing, delivers flexibility to match its performance, said Olivier Merven, regional manager: African Operations at Bytes Document Solutions. ‘When it comes to colour digital printing, the Versant 2100 is highly efficient and rapidly delivers the sort of quality output that wins clients in competitive markets,’ Merven noted.
Continuing, Diakosavas said Xerox solutions incorporate constant and consistent innovation which is important to companies and the general public in Zambia. ‘This is a fast-developing country in terms of technology. People here are hungry for the latest in hardware and software and this is why Xerox and its partners are winning new business.’
After winning two accolades at the event (Best Local or International stand and Most Innovative Product) Diakosavas described the Zambian ICT & Pay Expo 2015 as a success for DIGIprint and Xerox, and also for the delegates who attended. As a barometer for the technology industry in Zambia, he said the level of interest bodes well: ‘In terms communicated to the people who were at the event, it was a great success – and we stood out as one of the brightest and best in Zambia, with this exhibition really getting Digiprint and Xerox out there.’

NEXT GENERATION OPTICAL NETWORKING 2015
Exclusive interview with Dell'Oro
Register before 24 April 2015 and SAVE UP TO €800
50% Discount for Operators
Ahead of this year's event, Conference Director, Dr. Jane Watson interviews, Jimmy Yu, VP, Optical Transport Market Research, Dell'Oro Group. Jimmy will be chairing the session; Packet Optical Integration - what are the options and timeframes?
JW: What are you looking forward to at the Next Generation Optical Networking Nice 2015?
JY: I’m looking forward to all the great presentations that address the latest areas in Optical Networking from CDC-F ROADMs to Carrier SDN. But more importantly, I’m looking forward to all the great conversations and discussions.
JW: What do you feel are the key challenges that the optical networking industry is facing in 2015 and what do you hope the conference will answer?
JY: Challenges for 2015. For operators, it’ll be deciding on what their future architecture will be, including the level of packet optical integration and use of carrier SDN. For equipment manufacturers, it’ll be refining their product portfolio to address the next generation architecture. I hope this conference helps the operators and equipment manufacturers come together and answer this common challenge.
JW: Where has 100G has taken us so far and where is 400G & 1T likely to take us?
JY: I think 100G has a long ways to go. 100G dominates the long haul system market. Now it’s time for the metro market. I’m forecasting a large growth in demand for 100G in metro applications, especially as prices take a step down with the introduction of coherent CFP2-ACO.
JW: What are you views on OTN and ROADMs and their role in the next generation optical network?
JY: I think it’s practically a given, for a number of years now, that both OTN switching and ROADMs are a critical component to the next generation optical network. The first ROADM was installed around a decade ago and has since advanced in size reduction and number of degrees. Now everyone is talking about CDC-F ROADM. It’s just a matter of time, when CDC-F ROADM is incorporated in a large share of the optical network. The same is for OTN switching.
JW: What do Cloud and SDN mean for next generation optical networking?
JY: I think Carrier SDN is a new architecture that is important to the evolution of the optical network. It is an architecture that can allow operators to reduce the barriers in their network that were created over time as they expanded their network. In return for lowering the obtrusive barriers, operators are expected to be rewarded with lower operating costs and given an instrument to generate new sources of revenue as well as maximize company profits.
JW: More specifically your session is covering Packet Optical Integration and can you give the attendees a quick view of what will be covered during this session?
JY: The Packet Optical Integration session will be a time when a number of industry specialists will have an opportunity to share the items they are working on or challenged with in the area of Optical and Packet. By the end of this session, we hope everyone has a better understanding of what packet optical integration is, why it is important in our industry, when we’ll see more of it, and to what level of integration. These insights will be brought into the session via numerous presentations from operators and equipment manufacturers.
